SPECTACULAR is a project that arose from observing the large billboards in Mexico City. I adapted the morphology of the billboard - made up of interchangeable vertical panels - to my painting, since it offered me the possibility of creating a discontinuous, fragmented image that would function as a critical mirror of the relationship of the contemporary individual with his digital environment.
To emulate the way a spectacular beginning is formed by painting on an indefinite series of panels. Once a certain compositional balance has been achieved, I move the panels to betray the initial image and let chance intervene in the work. The image undergoes continuous fragmentations that give rise to new combinations. In this way, fragments of figures taken from ancient painting, religious symbols, shapes and colours are distributed randomly on the final work, giving the impression of a discontinuous image, difficult to read.
These “spectaculars” act as metaphors for our current relationship with images, characterized by speed and spectacularization, which entails an inability to contemplate, that is, to let ourselves be carried away by the eternity of the moment to which the painting invites.
